Walking through BeCentral brings a smile to your face. Its co-working spaces are designed according to a theme which creates a different vibe in each room. ‘The Galaxy’ recalls space travel, with coppered and dark blue walls and a motif on tables and floor tiles inspired by asteroid fields. ‘Youth Campus’ is a playful, quirky space designed for start-ups specialising in education. It refers to childhood with vibrant colours and hula hoops hanging on the ceiling. ‘The Angel Hub’ builds on the Art Deco architecture of Brussels Central Station. The atmosphere is warm and cosy, with vintage furniture and China-inspired vintage wallpapers.

Every room is designed to spark the creativity of the user. “The variety of rooms makes it possible to provide spaces where each individual or group can find their ideal place in a dynamic and stimulating environment, which is perfect for young entrepreneurs,” says Maxime de Campenaere. “We wanted the spaces to be different but to be linked by a common thread at the same time. To do this, we didn’t want the themes to be too strong or too specific. Rather, we created a set of atmospheres, united by a frank use of colour and materials.”

The digital campus was not designed in one go. When the campus started to attract new start-ups, its expansion offered the opportunity to add more themes. “The project has grown organically,” says De Campenaere. “This is stimulating and allows us to move forward in different directions. We never get bored!”

Does De Campenaere believe you can plan an atmosphere beforehand and steer it in a certain direction? “Yes and no, that’s what’s exciting. “Our role as an interior designer is to try to master as many parameters as possible so that the magic can happen.” [TS]
